FONATUR

This past February, The 5th National Forum for Tourism was held in Quintana Roo with Miguel Gomez Mont, General Manager of FONATUR, as key speaker. Here is some of the goals the institution has for the Mexican Tourism industry for the next few years.

"We will modernize and strengthen the Fund in order to make it the hand that promotes the investment in tourism. Following the guidelines of its top entity, the Ministry of Tourism, it will become the promoting axis of the country's tourism development by driving, managing and controlling the execution of viable and sustainable projects. We will also convert it in the facilitator to obtain financial resources, for itself, and for the whole sector in general."

Gomez Mont also said that the five CIPs (Integrally Planned Centers) and their influence zones will be key during president's Felipe Calderon administration in order to place Mexico as one of the five most visited places in the world.

Private Investment Support

Some of the projects that will be promoted with the support of private investment will benefit the sailing and cruising community, like:

Puerto Escondido in Loreto: where FONATUR will invest approximately $50 million USD and expect to create 3,240 direct jobs and 13,381 indirect jobs. Work is scheduled to start in 2008 and finish in 2009.

Mirador Chahue Tejon in Huatulco: here the investment is lower than Puerto Escondido, only $2.5 million USD and also is scheduled for 2008 and 2009.

Marina Chahue, also in Huatulco will get $37 million USD and will be finished sometime this year.

Sector Conejos
also in this CIP, will have a private jolt of $45 million USD, generating 7,000 direct jobs.

New projects under way

He also referred to the Sea of Cortez project which has concluded work in the following nautical stops: Puerto Escondido, La Paz, and Santa Rosalia in Baja California and Puerto Peñasco in Sonora. Work is still in progress in San Felipe and Santa Rosalita in Baja California, San Blas in Nayarit, Mazatlan and Topolobampo in Sinaloa and Guaymas in Sonora. Scheduled to start work this year are Santos Coronados and Santa Maria in Baja California.

Marina Cozumel will be built with a budget of $20 million USD, FONATUR will spend 3.5 and the private sector 16.5 million USD, the new marina will generate 961 direct jobs and 3,968 indirect ones. Still a bit far away in time although, since it is scheduled to be terminated by the year 2020.

State and Local Assistance

The head of the Institution also said that they will create partial programs for Local Urban Development in some locations of the Sea of Cortez Project:

  • Los Angeles Bay-San Felipe and Tijuana-Ensenada-Sebastian Vizcaino Bay in Baja California.
  • Los Cabos-La Paz-Santa Rosalia-Loreto and Laguna Ojo de Liebre-Laguna San Ignacio-Todos Santos-Los Cabos in Baja California Sur.
  • Huatabampo-Guaymas-San Carlos-Puerto Libertad-Puerto Peñasco in Sonora.
  • Topolobampo-Culiacan-Mazatlan-Teacapan in Sinaloa.
  • Banderas Bay-Compostela- San Blas in Nayarit.

To finalize his participation Gomez Mont said that this year, the BMIT (Mexican Tourism Investment Purse) will become a more financial event and focused on direct contact between capital investors and project developers, expecting a crowd of 900 participants and 60 expositors.
