When you think of Yucatan, usually images of pyramids and colonial cities come to your mind. However, many locals spend their weekends sailing and fishing in their wonderful harbors. One of the youngest harbors is Yucalpeten located four kilometers to the west of Puerto Progreso. This shelter harbor has a clover shape and has an industrial zone and a touristic one. Here you can find a nautical base, two condos and eight marinas for recreational ships. Most vessels are motorized and sailing ships between 11 and 70 feet long. Because of its great location, you can see there many vessels from USA refilling combustible and food on their way to the Caribbean Sea.
Yucalpeten is the antique name of Yucatan and means “when we get there, to the throat of the Earth”. This harbor is communicated by highway with Chelém and Chuburná at the east; Merida at the south and Progreso at the west. The tourist zone has wonderful sights. There you can see a poetic sunset and at the same time a beautiful landscape full of animals and pine or the intense work of the industrial zone. If fishing is your sport then you’ll be glad to know that Yucalpeten has all the marine species of the Mexican sea, and it’s considered the most important fishing centre of the Southeast of Mexico. During summer time every weekend regattas take place there and a good number of Hobie Cat 16, Sunfish and windsurfers compete for the zone Cups.
In June 1st, Yucalpeten celebrates the Marine Day with great parties, dance and “taquizas” Marina Silcer is the yacht club in the east beach of Chicxulub, there you can rent windsurfs, small sailing boats and kayaks for a great weekend experience and eat great seafood. Don’t miss the chance to live a true south Mexican experience in Yucalpeten. |
