Bare PolesCondition of a sailing ship when all sails have been taken down in a severe storm, very often a hazardous undertaking if there is a high sea running.
 
Barge(1) A cargo carrying vessel, usually without an engine, towed or pushed by a tug. Small barges for carrying cargo between ship and shore are known as lighters. (2) Also a term in sail racing - a boat which forces its way illegally between another contestant and the starting line is said to be barging.
 
BarnacleA small shellfish which sticks to the bottoms of ships.
 
BarographAn instrument used to keep a record of atmospheric pressure, such as on a paper drum.
 
BarometerAn instrument that measures atmospheric pressure in inches or millibars of mercury
 
Barometric PressureAtmospheric pressure as measured by a barometer.
