HPYC started as an idea the afternoon of Nov. 1, 1993 when Bob & Peetie "Vela" and Norm & Gigi "Phase II" were sitting having a cool one, Bob said "lets start a yacht club." What an Idea for Puerto Escondido. After much discussion HPYC officially started with the first meeting Nov. 18 1993. November 1993 there were 36 members, in 1994 there were 220 members. Though the years many cruisers and dirt dwellers have joined. As of June 2, 2005 there are a total of 1876 on the membership roster, with a total of 264 paid active members for 2006. Does anyone know the 8 current 2005 paid active members from 1994.

A love of the Sea, sharing friendships and social activities has always been the heart of HPYC.

The club grew and the activities.

The first thoughts of a "Harbor Clean Up Day" were mentioned in the June 10th, 1994 minutes, again March 4th, 1995. As the story goes, everyone thought cleaning up the harbor was a great idea, getting everyone together at one time seemed to be the big challenge. A pot luck dinner was announced, all coming to the dinner were met with a surprise. Before the dinner there was going to be a "Harbor Clean Up". All agreed this was so much fun "let's do it again next year". The meeting in January 1996 started the planning for the first "Loreto Fest" May 24th, 25, & 26th, 1996. It has become a four day event, Thursday there is a Ham Test held for new hamsters and those wishing to up grade.

What is the purpose of the club?

To help our national friends and neighbors and for the education of children. During the last 10 years we have helped send children to school, donated medical supplies to the hospital, helped the cultural center, donated air conditioners to the handicap school, aided the Internado School in Loreto and Lugui, helped the bicycle club of Loreto, gave financial aid to the battered mothers and children program in Loreto, plus help some of our cruiser friends when they have had disasters.
